Growing Vegetables - Week 1 |
- Firsty we chose a site out the front of our factory facing North East which receives 6 hours of morning sun. You will notice the hedge in the background, this is perfect as it starts to throw shade on the beds from about 12.30pm.
- Afternoon sun in summer can really knock your crop around so placing your more sensitive veggies like lettuce etc… closest to the hedge is a great way of preventing heat stress. We then placed our beds onto concrete (previously a 2 bay carpark) out the front of our factory, with the higher beds to the back.
- We have installed a Birdies Automatic Irrigation system into the beds making watering very easy. We filled the bottom 1/3 – 1/2 with washed river sand and the top 400mm with a quality organic soil and mushroom compost mix, stopping the soil short approx 100mm from the top edge to allow for mulch.
- Next we connected the drip line irrigation at right angles across the surface of the soil. We then applied Blood and Bone fertilizer and a rock mineral fertilizer to the beds and mulched..
